Fighting Through Pain: The Journey Behind the ProperFist Glove

Fighting Through Pain: The Journey Behind the ProperFist Glove

For over two decades, I trained in boxing. I wasn’t a naturally gifted athlete, but I made up for it with discipline, repetition, and the kind of pain tolerance that comes from pushing through injuries. Like many fighters, I expected the bruises, busted lips, and sore ribs.

But what really slowed me down and nearly stopped me were the hand injuries.

Not just one. Not just once. But a chronic, frustrating cycle of joint pain, knuckle damage, and sore wrists that would flare up even after light bag work. Eventually, it got so bad that I couldn’t hit the heavy bag at all. The thing I loved most about training became something I dreaded.

Like most fighters, I tried to solve the problem by switching gear. I bought the Winning GT-9900, one of the softest bags on the market. It’s made entirely of foam with no sand or shredded filler. It helped a little, but not enough. The pain always came back when I was fully gloved up and ready to train.

Then came the lightbulb moment:
The problem wasn’t the bag. It was the glove.

Most boxing and kickboxing gloves are not designed to allow a true, closed fist. The padding and structure force your hand into a half-formed position. Over time, this causes unnatural pressure and weakens the body’s natural structural support.

So I tried switching to MMA gloves. These at least let me close my hand completely. But they introduced a different problem: tight finger spacers that dug into my finger webs and distracted me every time I landed a punch. That constant irritation became just another form of pain.

That’s when I took matters into my own hands literally.

I began experimenting with gloves by cutting them open at the palm and thumb to allow better fist formation. The concept worked, but the stability wasn’t there. They shifted on impact. I knew if I wanted to keep training without injury, I had to create something better.

Building the Properfist Glove

After months of prototypes and frustration, I developed what is now called the Properfist Glove the only training glove designed specifically to allow fighters to form a real fist while protecting their hands.

Key Features:

  • Freedom to form a full, natural fist
  • No finger spacers or pressure points
  • Unanchored thumb for clinch grip training
  • Stable enough for heavy bag, mitts, and drills

What started as a personal solution quickly resonated with others. MMA fighters appreciated the ability to train in a fist formation that mirrored their fight gloves. Self-defense students and fitness kickboxers loved building muscle memory for a real-world strike, in case they ever needed it.

The Power of the Proper Fist

This glove changed the way I train. The very first time I hit the bag with the ProperFist glove, I felt the impact travel through my fist naturally. No sharp jolts. No pain in the knuckles or wrist. Just power, the way it’s supposed to feel.

It wasn't just a piece of gear, it was a way back into the sport I loved.

Today, the ProperFist glove is being used by fighters, coaches, and self-defense students who want to train smarter and protect their most important weapon, their hands.
